OAKLAND – Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, congratulates newly appointed Bishop Robert Christian, OP, who has been appointed to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The appointment was announced today by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Barber’s statement follows:
“On behalf of the whole Diocese of Oakland, I congratulate Bishop-designate Christian on his appointment as auxiliary bishop of San Francisco. I have known Bishop-designate Christian for more than 30 years, since we were both working in Rome. He is a very kind and generous man, an excellent theologian, and a man with a world-wide vision of the Church. We in Oakland are honored that Bishop-designate Christian was formed in our Diocese at St. Albert’s College in the Rockridge district and that he is currently teaching at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley – also in the Oakland Diocese. As a Jesuit, I am particularly proud that Bishop-designate Christian is a graduate of two Jesuit schools: St. Ignatius College Prep and Santa Clara University. I welcome his presence and advice in the fraternity of the bishops of the Province of San Francisco, and congratulate the Dominican Fathers on giving us such a fine son of the Church.”
The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in the East Bay region, Alameda and Contra Costa, and includes approximately 400,000 Catholics in 84 parishes.
