Bishop Michael Barber, SJ, has revoked the general faculties of Father Sunil Orathel, SDB, effective April 12, 2024. This decision was recommended by the diocesan Adult Review Board, after the diocese received an allegation that Salesian Father Orathel violated personal boundaries of an adult.
Under the terms of this canonical decree, Salesian Father Orathel cannot function as a priest within the Diocese of Oakland, including celebrating a public Mass or other sacraments, until completion of an investigation and resolution of the matter. The decree is not a judgement of guilt, but a temporary measure intended to protect the rights and reputations of all involved. At this point the Diocese of Oakland has no canonical relationship with Father Orathel, who is a member of the Salesians.
Please keep all impacted by this situation in your prayers, that they may experience God’s merciful healing.
Anyone who has information concerning an allegation of sexual misconduct by a clergy member or any diocesan employee or volunteer should contact your local civil authority, i.e. police or sheriff department, and the chancellor for the Diocese of Oakland, Mr. Rick Medeiros, [email protected] or 510-267-8306.
