As the CYO seasons begin, CYO teams are challenged, not only to play games but for service to others as well, in their roles as Catholic-Christian communities. There are many examples from around the Diocese of service by CYO teams!
Recently,
the St. Leander 8th grade CYO basketball team,, led by Coach Chris Alvarez, collected food from their San Leandro neighborhood for donation to St. Vincent de Paul. This has been an annual, long-time committment by St. Leander CYO.
Another recent project was by the
Our Lady of Grace 8th Grade American basketball team, Castro Valley, and Coach Anthony Solis for a food drive for St. Vincent de Paul and a toy drive for the local fire departmant.
An outstanding eexample of service was by
St. Bede CYO, Hayward, hosting the "Volley for the Cure," Girls' CYO preseason volleyball tournament, with proceeds from the tournament donated to breast cancer research. In addition,
Metro CYO League hosted a preseason tournament with proceeds also going to breast cancer research. Both of these tournamenets are annual events, combining fun with service.
Examples of young people living their faith by helping others!
