The Russian invasion of Ukraine from the north, east and south, which began on February 24th, has targeted several of the countries largest cities including the capital, Kyiv, and caused a major humanitarian crisis.
Many are trying to escape the violence. Counting those who fled the country the week prior to the start of the war, it is estimated that over 2 million people have been displaced by the conflict, according to the United Nations. CNN reported that Russia's relentless bombardment of residential areas across Ukraine has so far forced more than one million refugees to leave for neighboring in just seven days, as fierce fighting continues into its second week.
Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said in a statement Thursday: "I have worked in refugee emergencies for almost 40 years, and rarely have I seen an exodus as rapid as this one." He added that “Millions more people are likely to be forced to flee Ukraine.” Half a million of the refugees are children, according to UNICEF.
As the Ukrainian conflict continues unabated, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is providing support to the Church as it responds to the unfolding humanitarian crisis across a handful of affected countries.
CRS is sending staff and resources to assist its local Caritas partners in Ukraine, Romania, Moldova and Poland to address the growing needs.
The Church's initial support of displaced families includes, but is not limited to:
Food distributions
Support with reception centers at Caritas offices, train stations, and transit hubs.
Transportation services
Support with evacuation centers, which provide shelter, food and counseling services for displaced families.
Evacuation of vulnerable children from conflict areas to centers in safe zones.
Catholic Relief Services is not new to providing help in this region. Since 2014, conflict along the eastern border of Ukraine has already displaced 1.3 million people from their homes and claimed 14,000 lives. Throughout this time, Caritas Ukraine, with support from CRS, has been providing emergency relief and recovery.
Financial contributions are welcomed for CRS to continue its relief efforts as the crisis increases. To donate and to learn more about CRS' Ukraine response, visit their crisis watch page, or contact the diocesan CRS office at [email protected].
