The Philippines has been devastated from back‑to‑back typhoons that ravaged homes and communities. On October 31, Super Typhoon Goni, called Rolly locally, made landfall on the eastern island of Catanduanes with winds of up to 195 mph, affecting people across eight regions. Then, on November 11, Typhoon Vamco, called Ulysses locally, struck Central Luzon, north of the capital, Manila, with winds of nearly 100 mph, including the cities of Metro Manila. These storms have destroyed vital water infrastructure and flooded cities, leaving hundreds of thousands of people displaced and over 100 dead so far. Compounding the need is the high number of COVID‑19 cases that makes relief efforts particularly difficult. Catholic Relief Services is working with its diocesan Caritas partners to provide critical emergency supplies—including food, water, emergency shelter materials, sanitation and hygiene support. Longer term, the focus will be on the repair and rebuilding of water infrastructure and safe homes.
