Las Posadas, a ceremonial reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, has been celebrated annually at Old Mission San Jose since 1982. For nine days, from December 15th to the 23rd, at 6:00 p.m. we process to a location, a short walk from the Mission, with a beautiful hand-carved statue of the Holy Family all the while singing Christmas carols. At our destination “Joseph & Mary” ask for lodging but are refused. Finally, they are allowed to enter and once inside, enjoy a short musical program followed by refreshments. On the final night, December 23rd, there will be caroling in the Mission church featuring the magnificent Mission San Jose organ and a pinata for the children. Participants are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring a flashlight or headlamp to read the song sheets. Join us rain or shine for this lovely, no-cost celebration of the true meaning of Christmas!
