In an act of solidarity, the Catholic bishops of California are asking all parishes to celebrate a Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice on June 9, 2020, the date of George Floyd’s funeral. Instead of a homily, priests have been asked to observe eight minutes and 46 seconds of silent prayer. That was the amount of time Mr. Floyd suffered his asphyxiation.
Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, will celebrate Mass on June 9 at 12:10 p.m. in the Cathedral of Christ the Light. The liturgy will be livestreamed.
Catholics are encouraged to join Bishop Barber and their local parish in this moment to seek conversion of hearts and minds so as to rid ourselves of the sin of racism.
