Sister Mary Menegatti, OP, died in Fremont on Aug.14. She was 77 years old and in the 55th year of her religious profession.
Sister Mary was the daughter of John L. Menegatti and Marie Galusha Menegatti. Mary and her twin brother, Bill, were born on June 22, 1945, in Los Angeles. She met the Dominican Sisters when she was a student at San Gabriel Mission High School, San Gabriel, CA. In 1964, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose and made her first profession of vows in 1966.
For 45 years, Sister Mary ministered in Catholic schools as teacher or principal. She served at Immaculate Conception Elementary School, San Francisco; St. Catherine’s Academy, Anaheim; San Gabriel Mission High School, San Gabriel; and in Los Angeles at St. Michael’s Elementary School, St. Ignatius of Loyola School and Santa Teresita School.
In 2000, she received the Distinguished Principal Award from the United States Department of Education and the National Catholic Educational Association.
Sister Mary treasured her family, friends and Dominican community. She had an unfailing sense of humor, insatiably read books about United States history, and thrilled to opportunities to sail with friends.
Sister Mary is survived by her twin brother, Bill Menegatti, her sister, Elizabeth Montes, nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse Chapel, 43326 Mission Circle, Fremont. Burial will follow at the Congregation’s cemetery, God’s Acre, at the Motherhouse.
