After over 50 years coaching young people in CYO, Ray Bannister from St. John the Baptist CYO, San Lorenzo was again honored with the St. John's basketball court named in his honor.
"Coach Ray" was originally honored in 2016 with the presentation of the Diocesan Medal of Merit for over 50 years of service to youth in CYO. At the time, the St. John's court was named in his honor with a plaque on the wall of the gym. When the gym floor was resurfaced recently, the court floor was officially inscribed with his name, and he was surprised by a special assembly of St. John's Catholic School students in the gym chanting "Coach Ray ... Coach Ray" Besides coaching, Ray spends a lot of time working with students at the school.
Ray has coached the St. John's CYO 2nd grade teams each year, both girls and boys teams, in their first basktball experenences in CYO. The SAC Leaague allows coaches on the court during those non-competative 2nd grade games to help the young playuers. He can ge seen on those Saturdays instrucitng and encouorageing both teams.
