The annual Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Collection will be taken the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 21-22. CCHD is a program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established in 1970 as their domestic anti-poverty program.
The bishops realized that the existing charitable services alone were not creating the changes people needed to stay out of poverty. They recognized that what was needed was a program addressing the policies and structures that perpetuate poverty in order to bring about lasting social and economic change.
By donating to CCHD, you are supporting grassroots organizations that are assisting low-income people to lift themselves out of poverty in our diocese—helping people to help themselves is the CCHD slogan. The important work being done by these groups is being threatened by the current economic crisis which is causing many of them to struggle to survive. To learn more about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, please see their national website and the diocesan website at www.cchdeastbay.org.
To assist you in promoting this collection, your parish should have already received promotional materials, by U.S.Mail, from the CCHD national office, like envelopes and posters, as well as from the CCHD diocesan office, which included bulletin and pulpit announcements. Electronic copies were also sent by e-mail. These collection materials will also soon be available on the diocesan CCHD website.
