Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ makes this announcement in the June 21 issue of The Catholic Voice:
Since the beginning of our diocese, The Catholic Voice has served as our newspaper, telling the story of the Catholic Church in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. We are grateful to the foresight of Bishop Floyd Begin, the first bishop of Oakland, who was the founding publisher of The Catholic Voice. The June 21, 2021 Catholic Voice is Volume 59, Number 6.
It is the last issue of The Catholic Voice on newsprint.
In late July, you will be receiving the first issue of The Catholic Voice magazine. I am excited to be able to build on Bishop Begin’s vision to bring stories of faith and inspiration to you, the faithful of the diocese, in a new and, we hope, compelling format.
You will find much to be familiar in the magazine format: coverage of parish and diocesan events, stories of witness to the faith, my regular column. But we also hope you find the new format, which will include new columnists and renewed focus on our shared role of being missionary disciples, will help you to feel a greater connection to your diocese and to grow deeper in your faith.
I hope the magazine will be a welcome visitor to your home, and that you will share it with your family and friends when you are finished reading it. For breaking news of the diocese, such as updates to COVID-19 policies, we will keep you posted online at
www.catholicvoiceoakland.org.
In transitioning to the magazine, I want to emphasize that the print edition will be mailed to all registered households in the Diocese of Oakland. Please be sure you, your families, and friends are registered at your parish. The parish informs the Voice of new parishioners, and subscribers.
There is no charge to the parish for these subscriptions; we consider The Catholic Voice an integral part of our communication effort and ask you to prayerfully support it through both the Bishop’s Appeal and the Catholic Communication Campaign.
I am grateful to the 60 years of editors, writers, reporters, photographers, designers, advertising and circulation managers and readers who have been active in the Voice ministry. I congratulate Michele Jurich, our editor, as she takes the helm of this new publication, which I pray will help all of us “to know Christ better and to make Him better known.”
