    DEC Welcomes Patti Collyer!

New Diocesan Coordinator for Youth & Young Adult Ministry
Patti has been actively involved in ministry for over 20 years. For the past three-and-a-half years, she has served St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Concord as the Director of Family Life Ministry and Adult Formation and prior to that was the Coordinator of Youth Ministry. Her passion for working with young people earned her the City of Concord Humanitarian Award in 2005. Patti has established over 20 ministries to serve the parish supporting people in different phases of life. Patti is known for her boundless energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to serve God's people and is passionate about her faith, family, prayer, learning and teaching. She has given numerous workshops and retreat talks throughout Northern California. A native of upstate New York, Patti spent a number of years working in corporate America. She left the workforce to raise her family and become involved in ministry. She and her husband Dick have been happily married for 27 years and they have three college age children as well as a son in heaven. Her life verse is Phil. 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Patti is replacing Joe Murray who resigned this position in December 2009. She will be providing leadership in youth and young adult ministry, including Confirmation, throughout the Diocese as well as having responsibilities for events and trainings. She is most excited about the opportunity to work within the diverse cultural communities. Her start date is April 6, 2010. Welcome Patti!

By Joe Murray -December 10, 2009

The New Moon opened November 20, 2009 and brought in over $140 million the opening weekend. Many young ladies wore their prom dresses to see the film for its premier. The beauty of the liturgy is part of this mystery; it is a sublime expression of God's glory and, in a certain sense, a glimpse of heaven on earth. POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION SACRAMENTUM CARITATIS"

About Youth and Young Adult Ministry

The Diocese of Oakland endorses the Total Youth Ministry concept as defined in Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry from the United States Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops. We encourage all youth ministers of the Diocese of Oakland to foster the conversion of youth and young adults as part of John Paul II's New Evangelization. The New Evangelization is focused on the person of Christ; it is the responsibility of the entire People of God; it is directed at individuals and whole cultures and calls for a missionary spirituality. In terms of youth and young adult ministry, all programs should seek to build Christ-centered youth ministry that empowers young people to take responsibility for evangelizing their families and friends, and should focus on each individuals so they can personally encounter Christ. Youth and young adult ministry must penetrate the culture of noise and help our young people develop a bold spirituality that will build the Kingdom of God right here in the Diocese of Oakland.
