To Make Up an Absence
If you are unable to attend this class, please submit to the instructor at
the next class written responses to two questions from each chapter and one
from the handouts below (for a total of seven questions). Each response should be 2-3 paragraphs in
length and address the question completely.
Chapter 9: Receive the Holy Spirit
- Why do we call the third Person of the Trinity the "Holy
Spirit"? (see CCC, no. 691) Why do we refer to the Holy Spirit
as "he" and never "it"?
- "When the Father sends his Word, he always sends his Breath" (CCC,
no. 689). Explain the meaning of this statement, and give as evidence at
least two passages from Scripture.
- Describe how the Holy Spirit is revealed and how this method of
revelation demonstrates God's own teaching method (see CCC
684, 687). What are some implications of the character of divine
pedagogy for your own teaching method?
- Choose two symbols of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Catechism
(p. 107, CCC nos. 696-701). Citing at least two specific
passages, briefly describe how each symbol appears in the Old and
New Testaments. Compare and contrast the two images of the Holy
Spirit. What qualities of the Holy Spirit does each express?
Chapter 10: The Church: Reflecting the Light of Christ
- List the different meanings of the word "Church" (see also p.
130). What is the primary meaning of "Church" in this chapter? Be
specific. Does the multiplicity of uses of the word have the
potential to confuse? Explain.
- How was the Church prefigured in the people of Israel? Cite specific
examples.
- How is the Church both visible and invisible (spiritual)?
Discuss some errors that arise from denying either the visible or
invisible reality of the Church.
- How does the description of the Church as the body of Christ (see 1 Cor. 12:12ff) illustrate both her unity and her need for various
organizational structures?
Chapter 11: The Four Marks of the Church
- In what ways is Bl. Junípero Serra an
appropriate patron of this catechetical institute? How did he
exemplify two of the four marks of the Church?
- How can the four marks of the Church be used to identify Christ's Church?
Why might the four marks be accepted as a dependable means of identification?
- How is the institution of the papacy integral to the oneness of
the Church? Cite historical examples.
- What do we mean when we call the Church "catholic"? How are not
all Catholics "Roman Catholics"? How does the Church's catholicism
give her a relationship with all people?
- How is the Church holy? Include a reference to Scripture in your
answer. Do the sins of her members diminish the Church's holiness?
- Describe three specific ways that the pope and the bishops
exercise the Church's charism of infallibility (p. 133-134). Can you
cite examples of each?
Handouts
- The Holy Spirit
"Everything that Jesus has, the Father has given to the Holy Spirit
for the sake of his Church." Describe the work of the Holy Spirit in the
Church, using at least two passages from Scripture.
- Infallibility: God's Perfect Gift to His Imperfect Church
Describe the precise conditions under which the Pope and the Bishops in union with him are preserved from
teaching error. What is the difference between infallibility and
impeccability?
- Separated Brethren
Describe the role of the Church and of individual Catholics in
working for Christian unity. Why is it important to recognize the
dangers of false ecumenism?
