Ongoing Formation of Priests
The program of ongoing formation of priests in the Diocese of Oakland is the specific application of the goals, objectives and norms outlined by the congregation for the Clergy in its Directory on the Ministry and Life of Priests and by the U.S. Bishops in The Basic Plan for the Ongoing Formation of Priests.
The ongoing formation of priests is “the continuing integration of priestly identity and functions or service for the sake of mission and communion with Christ and the Church” (The Basic Plan for the Ongoing Formation of Priests, NCCB, 2001, p.11). It “must encompass and harmonize all [four of] the dimensions of the formation of priest”: spiritual, human, intellectual and pastoral (Directory on the Ministry and Life of Priests, Cong. for the Clergy, 1994, n.74). Because of the specific character of the Church in the Diocese of Oakland, the efforts for the ongoing formation of her priests call for particular attention to the diverse needs of the presbyterate and the people and communities it serves. This is accomplished by workshops, study days, symposia and retreats offered throughout the year for all priests. Some programs, including a mentoring program, are conducted for specific groups such as new pastors or administrators, priests new to the diocese and the recently ordained priests. Gatherings for the retired priest community are also offered.
